Charity project: The Ultimate Triathlon Adventure In Aid Of The “Caring 4 Kids†Foundation In Honour Of Chaira Valle
February 27th, 2007 by Glen Gore
One of South Africa’s top multi sport athletes will be embarking on an epic adventure to raise funds and awareness for the plight of some many young South African kids suffering from Cancer. Glen Gore, along with a host of other contributing corporate sponsors and athletes will be completing the adventure in memory of Chiara Valle (aged 3yrs old) who passed away just recently from Neuroblastoma, and all funds raised will be put forward into establishing a trust foundation in honour of her name, to assist and help others in similar situations.
The adventure will be a swim/bike/run of epic proportions as Glen and his fellow athletes make their way down to Durban, starting at the Vaal Dam (Vereeniging being the home of Chiara’s parents and the central starting point for this charity drive). The total distance from start to finish being in the region of 550km. The event will take place over 3 days starting on the 1st March and ending on Saturday the 3rd March.
The proposed format will be as follows. Glen Gore, multiple South African triathlon and Ironman champion, will be spear-heading the solo individual effort and will in the space of 3 days, complete the following distances.
Day 1: swim 4km, cycle 180km, run 21km (start point for swim: Vaal Dam)
Day 2: swim 4km, cycle 180km, run 21km (start point for swim: Drakensberg Sun)
Day 3: swim 2km, cycle 120km, run 10km (start point for swim: Midmar Dam)
Glen is quoted as saying, “I know the parents personally and I also knew Chiara. Because I have children of my own, I can only but imagine what it must be like for them and for so many other parents who have to suffer through the same pain of losing a child. GOD has given me the talent to be an athlete and make a living from doing a sport I really love. Now it’s my turn to use that ability and help others in need. I have planned this little adventure since the day I heard of Chiara’s passing away and hopefully in some way, by completing and making a success of this charity driven event, her name can live on and others can be helped in similar situations. I chose this format specifically because first and foremost, I am a triathlete, so swimming, biking and running is a natural phenomenon for me. The other reason being that we have had hundreds of cyclists complete the journey from JHB down to Durban over the last few years, but no group has ever swam, biked and run down to Durban. That’s the draw card I am looking for as I aim to create a big impact within the media circles which will translate into the bigger corporates getting involved and hopefully filling the coffers of the foundation. This is not about me but about what I (along with others) can hopefully do for those in need of helpâ€.
