Ironman World Championship: three days to go
October 11th, 2007 by Nikola Tosic
3 days to go. Registered. Race number 1003. Getting nervous. I need a massage. Julie, where are you? Feeling knotty. Have to get it sorted out. Had another swim this morning. Felt like I was at a Big Wave competition at Waimea Bay. Gosh, where have all the beautiful fish gone. Its wild and murky, no viz. Scary. Good training, I guess. One never knows what the sea”s mood will be like on Saturday. But I sure do not wish for this. Saw Normann Stadler in the water. Wonder what he must be feeling like.
Did I tell you about the Parade of Nations. Yesterday, from the King Kamehameha for about a mile down the raod. All the nations, in alphabetical order with our flags. 8 South Africans. Goose-bumpy stuff. I get very emotional with these things. And right behind us, Natascha Badmann leading the Swiss group of 63 athletes. Amazing what she has done for triathlon. She still is my hero. A real lady. Well the parade lead us straight into the opening of the Ford Ironman Village. Clever hey, they know just how to get us to spend money. And there is just so much that I would love to spend money on. All the big names are in the Village. Mark Allen, Dave Scott etc have stands there. All the current big names do talks almost on the hour. Its almost too much. Should be putting the feet up, but there is just so much to do.
Got sunburnt on the bike yesterday, despite a factor 100. Have to cover up more. And was wearing my race kit….and got chafed. My old kit. Shows you what these conditions can do. Hopefully it will heal in the next 3 days.
Never seen so many beautiful, lean, lanky bods together. Just a pity a lot of these guys are so aware of themselves!
Got some awesome fruit at the market, starfruit, persimmon, strawberry paw paws, and of course, my bananas. Just what I feel like right now, a nice big fruit salad.
Till tomorrow!

Hi Sandra,
Sounds like a once in a lifetime experience -> savour every moment of it -> you’ve done all the hard yards, now’s the time to enjoy. Sitting here in my office in sunny CT I can only dream of achieving what you’ve achieved -> reaching the pinacle of your sport -> the World Championships!!!! What a feat. Clanwilliam to Kona in 2 years! We’ll be thinking of you on Saturday and holding thumbs. Lou sends love from London -> will be back in CT tomorrow after going to visit Paul and Lucy and new addition Max with her folks.
Best of luck
Cheers

Hi Sandra
Listen carefully during the long quiet moments - that soft breeze and silent applause you hear is your hordes of fans from the other end of the world cheering wildly and shouting “go Sandra go you looking great” - We gonna clog the airwaves
Cheers
John and Sonja
