Maik Diercks introduction
February 3rd, 2007 by Maik Diercks
First of all: hello to everybody!
Just a little information about myself: My name is Maik Diercks, I’m 30 years old and I was an elite national swimmer. I studied sports marketing and PR in Germany (Berlin University) incl. coaching in general, fitness, swimming, nutrition and little parts of sports medicine.
I suffer from Type 1 diabetes, since I’m fifteen and I managed to participate at the German nationals from the age of 13 until the age of 28, except one year I have always been under the top 25 in Germany, even won one time and participated three times at the World Cup in Berlin a few times. My best result has been top 33 in the world on the 50 m freestyle.
My best times:
100 m freestyle 51.01
50 m freestyle 23.00
My coaching carreer is simple, I started coaching kids in swimming camps when I was 15, easy ways of showing kids how to have fun in the water and enjoy themselfes, plus the basics of swimming.
Later I worked as a Personal Coach in the USA and Germany, helping people to get in shape incl. watching the eating behaviours and their fridges.
Now I’m for two years in Cape Town, South Africa coaching almost every age and every level in swimming or just getting back into a good condition.
Hope to see you at the gym or the Pavillion pool in Sea Point.

Maik coaches me in swimming technique while I am in Cape Town. I would like him to write more about swimming. He is an excellent coach when it comes to swimming, I fully trust him, but always keep in mind that he is a swimmer and not an Ironman, so when it comes to some questions it is hard for him to relate. However he has extensive experience in training Ironman athletes in Germany.
