Sunday’s Suncoast Olympic Distance Triathlon was won by Glen Gore and Carla Germishuys, both from Team Wild.

Over 180 athletes took to the cool water in front of Suncoast Casino for a 1.5km swim. Lawrence Van Lingen led the guys out of the water, with Glen Gore, Carl Storm and Travis Campbell hot on his heels. However after a small accident only 500m into the cycle leg Lawrence gave up his placing to let the 4 chasers come past. Dean Moore then joined the pack and 4 athletes headed out ahead of the chasing groups behind Lawrence, who only suffered only a small gaze, chased the leading pack hard, but only managed to catch up 2minutes over the 40km cycle leg. The Athletes were treated to full road closure by the Durban Metro Police, which provided some excellent racing.

Jane Brewer pushed the pace in the ladies triathlon to lead the ladies section into the Bike / Run Transition, however she quickly gave it up speedy Gauteng triathlete Carla Germishuys. Samantha Spong came off the bike in third place to chase the duo hard. However she was unable to catch up any placings over the 10km – 2 lap run route.

Dean Moore came off the bike in first position, just ahead of Glen Gore, Travis Campbell and Carl Storm. Dean led the guys out of the transition, but was quickly chased down by Travis Campbell and Glen Gore. Glen stamped his authority on the race on the first lap and took over the lead at the start of the second lap and steadily built on his lead to win the Olympic Distance Triathlon.

Johnny De Dominicis who lead the second pack out of the Bike / Run transition onto the run route, chased hard and caught Dean Moore, Travis Campbell and Carl Storm to clinch a well deserved 2nd place win. Johnny who had the fastest 10 km run split, managed to put over 1min between himself and his 3rd placed chaser. Travis Campbell clinched 3rd place, with Carl Storm taking 4th and Dean Moore clinching 5th overall.

The women’s race was equally exciting. Carla Germishuys’s strong run leg, led her to victory, to collect her share of the R 12.000 prize money. Jane Brewer had to be content with 2nd place, with Samantha Spong claiming 3rd place.
